Hinterland Village is home to some of the most nocturnal and elusive animals of Kerala. Animals at Hinterland Village are not deadly at all but are so rewarding to watch or sight them. The list is not very long, but recently discovered Philautus Kani, a Bright Tree Frog also has its small population in the undergrowth of the village.
Mammal species include Indian Tree Shrew, Mole Shrew, Musk Shrew (Day’s Shrew), Salim Ali’s Fruit Bat, Indian Flying Fox or Great Indian Fruit Bat, Asian Palm Civet (Can be easily spotted at night), Common Mongooses, Ruddy Mongoose, Indian Palm Squirrel, Indian Mole Rat and Indian Bush Rat.
Amphibians include Philautus Kani or Bright Tree Frog (only found during the monsoon season) and Common Indian Toad. Reptiles include Rat Snake, Water Snake (Neerkoli is the local name), Carpet Viper (very hardly seen), Western Gecko, and Indian Day Gecko. |
